Job description:

A medical biller or medical coder collects payments from patients and submits reimbursement claims to insurance companies. After patients receive health care services, they assign codes to diseases and treatments for billing purposes. A medical biller or medical coder sends bills to patients, and submits claims for reimbursement to insurance companies and government entities like Medicare. They also collect payments and maintain billing records.

Work environment:

A medical biller or medical coder can work in a variety of health care settings, including private offices, hospitals, clinics or rehabilitation facilities.

Training requirements:

Medical billers and coders receive on-the-job training, but some employers prefer post-secondary education such as a certificate or an associate's degree.
