Job description:
A health educator encourages individuals and communities to adopt behaviors that promote healthy living and prevent diseases. Health education includes topics such as proper nutrition, exercise, avoiding sexually transmitted diseases and the habits and behaviors necessary to avoid illness. A health educator must take the cultural backgrounds of their patients into account. They may work one-on-one with patients and families, or organize classes and programs for larger groups.
Work environment:
A health educator may work in medical facilities, colleges or universities, nonprofit organizations or public health organizations. They typically work in offices, but may travel to teach classes or meet with patients.
Training requirements:
A health educator is required to earn a bachelor's degree, but some employers may prefer a master's degree and/or additional on-the-job experience.
