Job description:
A dental assistant performs a variety of patient care, office and laboratory duties in dental offices. They prepare patients for treatment, assure that dental records and instruments are ready for the dentist to use, serve as the dentist assistant at chair-side and keep patients comfortable and relaxed. A dental assistant also prepares and takes X-rays, processes films, sterilizes instruments and equipment, and instructs patients in post-treatment care.
Work environment:
A dental assistant may work in a dental office or clinic, like most jobs in dentistry. They are usually near the dental chair so that they can arrange instruments, materials and medication, and hand them to the dentist when needed.
Training requirements:
A dental assistant is required to complete a one-year training program. They may be licensed by the State of California Committee on Dental Auxiliaries, but licensing may not be required by dentistry employers.
